Siam Villa: A Reflection of Culture and Heritage (Part 2)

Updated: Mar 16, 2022

Moving further into our compound, a waterfront designed event center along with the Dr. Thiam Chokwattana Gallery welcomes you with a botannical garden and reservoirs. This part of our villa represents our roots from the second capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya is said to have been the golden age of Siam. It was founded in 1350 by King Ramathibodi I (Uthong). Located on the rich plains of the Chao Phraya River, the Kingdom lasted for 400 years. Ayutthaya is located 55 miles from present day Bangkok. It is an island surrounded by three rivers making it strategic in both agricultural and defensive point of view.

It became the center of trade and global commerce. The Kingdom had known ties with western and eastern countries. It also recognized as one of the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities of the world. It became an international trading hub and was also known in the 14th century as the strongest power in Indo-China. During this period, art, literature and learning flourished.

For many years, the Kingdom continiously expanded its territories absorbing the first capital, Sukhothai. It gained a strong foothold in Southern Asia. At some point in history, it was also able to counquer the famous Anchor Wat.

Now, it has been named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO to preserve the ancient architecture and its rich history. The city is characterized by its tall prangs (reliquery towers) and gigantic monesteries which shows a glimpse of its splendor. Today, the island is filled with museums as well as ancient temples that takes you to the time of its greatness.

The splendor characterized by Ayutthaya has greatly inspired us in building the waterfront and the gallery. The waterfront represented the city's proximity to the river and the buildings show us the diversity of the era. It the known time when Thailand opened international trade and has welcomed ambassadors accross the globe.

Ayutthaya is very important part of our heritage as it has shown the true potential of the Siamese people. It was the time when Siam was introduced to the world. We are proud to showcase the era throughout the villa and as a part of heritage.
